Practice test: IELTS Life Skills A2 speaking sample with answers

Welcome to UKLT’s practical guide to the IELTS Life Skills A2 speaking test. This sample includes examiner-style questions and model answers to help you prepare effectively for the UK visa requirement.

Understanding IELTS Life Skills A2

IELTS Life Skills tests your speaking and listening ability at CEFR level A2. Candidates apply for UK visas or settlement and need to show basic capacity to communicate in everyday English. The A2 level emphasises simple conversations, familiar topics, and clear pronunciation. The test is designed for quick assessment of practical communication rather than academic language.

Test structure and what examiners look for

Part 1 — Interview about everyday life

In Part 1 the examiner asks questions about personal information, daily routines, home, work or study, and preferences. The aim is to assess whether you can respond with simple, accurate sentences on familiar topics, using basic grammar with clear pronunciation.

Part 2 — Short talk based on a prompt

You are given a card with a topic and prompts. You speak for about 1–2 minutes about the topic and then answer 1–2 questions from the examiner. The focus is on creating a coherent, well‑paced monologue using simple language and clear organisation.

Part 3 — Quick discussion with the examiner

The examiner asks follow‑up questions related to Part 2, encouraging you to extend your responses using linking words and basic reasoning. Clarity, pronunciation, and fluency matter more than long, complex sentences.

Follow-up questions you might hear:

  • What part of your routine would you like to change? I would like to wake up a little earlier to take a short walk.
  • How can routine help you in everyday life? Routine keeps me organized and reduces stress.

Part 3 — Discussion: sample questions and answers

Question: Why is it useful to have a regular routine?

Answer: A routine gives structure, helps planning, and ensures important tasks are not forgotten. It also supports fluency by providing regular practice with English in daily life.

Question: Do you think your routine would be different on weekends?

Answer: Yes, on weekends I might sleep later, meet friends, and spend more time outdoors. I still try to speak English when I can.

Pronunciation, fluency, and accuracy at A2

Focus on clear pronunciation of everyday words, comfortable rhythm, and natural pauses between ideas. At A2, accuracy matters, but communication is the priority. Use simple sentence structures and common vocabulary to convey meaning reliably.

Common errors that native Spanish speakers often make

These are patterns to watch and correct during practice:

  • Omitting the subject in questions or short replies: learners may say "No understand" instead of "I don’t understand."
  • Confusion with articles: using "a" with incorrect nouns or omitting articles in front of singular nouns.
  • False friends and direct translations: using words that look familiar from Spanish but have a different English meaning.
  • Prepositions of time: mixing up in/on/at when talking about days and times (e.g., "on Monday" vs "in Monday").
  • Pronunciation of th sounds and final consonants: practise /θ/ as in "think" and /ð/ as in "that"; avoid dropping final sounds in words like "the" and "with".

Memorisation tips for A2 speaking success

Use fixed, high‑frequency phrases for introductions and opinions, and memorise a small set of connectives that help you link ideas. For example, start with phrases like "In my opinion," "I think," or "Firstly," and end with simple conclusions like "That’s all for now."
