Tables demand concise summarisation of data across categories. Look for trends such as which category is consistently higher, how close values are between groups, and any notable gaps or leaps. When describing tables, you can:
- Introduce with the overall pattern observed in the table.
- Reference specific categories and any time-related comparisons if the table includes multiple years or groups.
- Express quantities using exact figures or rounded numbers where appropriate, ensuring accuracy.
Vocabulary and grammatical accuracy for data description
Developing a bank of fixed phrases and flexible structures helps you deliver precise interpretations under exam conditions. Useful tense choices include present simple for general patterns, past simple for completed changes, and present perfect for changes that have relevance to the present. Collocations and sentence starters include:
- There was a significant increase/increase of X% in Y between year A and year B.
- The proportion of X rose from 20% to 35%, with a peak at 40% in year C.
- Category X accounted for the largest/lowest share, at Y%.
- In comparison to Z, X grew more rapidly, while Y remained relatively stable.
- Overall, X shows a trend of continuous growth over the period.
Common errors and how to avoid them
Spanish-speaking candidates often encounter pitfalls in Task 1. Common mistakes include overloading the response with too many data points, misinterpreting the axis scale, failing to paraphrase the prompt, and inconsistent tense use. Other frequent issues are failing to provide an overview or making incorrect or imprecise comparisons. To avoid these errors, rely on a simple planning method, select representative data points, and maintain a consistent tense throughout the description.
Planning, practice and feedback loop
Effective preparation combines deliberate practice with targeted feedback. A practical practice sequence might be:
- Analyse the graph or table and identify at least two notable trends or features.
- Draft an introduction that paraphrases the prompt in your own words.
- Write an overview framing the main patterns in 2–3 sentences.

Overview: Overall, internet access rises in all regions over the period, with Region A achieving the highest penetration by 2020. Expenditure patterns follow a similar upward trajectory, though the gaps between regions widen slightly in the final year.
Body Paragraph 1: In 2016, Region A had the highest access rate at about 62%, increasing to around 88% by 2020. Region B rose from roughly 45% to 70%, while Region C advanced from 30% to 55%. The year-by-year growth in Region A is steadier, whereas Regions B and C show sharper increases between 2018 and 2020.
Body Paragraph 2: The table reveals that monthly expenditure on internet services follows a similar ranking: Region A consistently spends more, rising from about £18 to roughly £28, Region B from £12 to £20, and Region C from £8 to £14. The percentage gap between Region A and the others remains noticeable, yet the expenditure gaps narrow somewhat by 2020.
