The test format at a glance

Writing

In the computer-delivered version you type your responses; there are on-screen word counts to help you meet the minimum requirements, and you can edit text on screen before final submission. Speaking

The Speaking test is conducted face-to-face with an IELTS examiner, regardless of whether you take the rest of the test on a computer. It lasts 11–14 minutes and comprises three parts: an introduction and interview, a short talk on a given topic, and a discussion related to the topic. The Speaking component is not delivered on the computer in the same way as the other sections; you will speak with an examiner and respond verbally while the interaction is recorded for quality assurance and scoring.
